Mac won’t extract a ZIP file because the disk is full

A ZIP archive can be smaller than the files it contains. Your Mac needs available space for the extracted files, and sometimes for temporary working space too. The exact message depends on macOS and the app opening the archive.

Check available space first

Open Apple menu  > System Settings > General > Storage. On older macOS versions, open About This Mac > Storage. Check the available amount, and allow the categories to finish loading.

Check the archive and where it will expand

  1. In Finder, select the ZIP file and choose File > Get Info to see its size.
  2. Make sure you know where it will extract. By default, double-clicking a ZIP in Finder usually creates the expanded item beside it.
  3. If the archive is large, the extracted contents may need considerably more space than the ZIP itself.
  4. Avoid repeatedly trying while the startup disk is nearly full; a failed extraction may leave a partial folder to inspect.

Find something you can review

Look through Downloads and other folders where you keep large files. Mac Disk Space Helper can scan a folder you choose and show the largest items. It reads sizes only and will not remove the ZIP, partial extraction, or any other file.

If you find a partial extracted folder, open it and confirm what it contains before deciding whether to remove it. Keep the original ZIP until you have a complete, usable copy.

Try again when there is enough room

After you have safely made room, check Storage again and retry the extraction. If the destination is an external drive, check that drive’s free space as well as your Mac’s available startup-disk space.
