“The operation can’t be completed because the disk is full” on Mac

This wording can appear while saving, copying, downloading, or expanding files. It usually means the disk needed for that operation has too little free space. Similar wording can vary by app and macOS version, so check which disk the operation was using.

Check the disk the task is using

For a file on your Mac, check Apple menu  > System Settings > General > Storage (or About This Mac > Storage on older versions). For a copy, check the destination too. For an external drive, select it in Finder and choose File > Get Info to see its free space.

Make sure this is really a disk-full issue

“Operation not permitted” or a message saying you do not have permission points to access rights, not necessarily a full disk. Check whether the app has permission to access that folder, or try a folder you own. Do not change permissions on system folders just to get past an error.

If the wording explicitly says the disk is full, a permissions change is unlikely to create more storage.

Review the task and its destination

  1. Check whether a failed copy or extraction left a partial item. Confirm what it contains before removing anything.
  2. Review large, familiar files in Downloads or another folder you choose.
  3. Mac Disk Space Helper can scan a selected folder and show its largest contents. It reads sizes only and does not move or delete files.
  4. If the operation targets an external disk, check that it has space and can accept files.

Retry after checking available space

Once you have made room safely on the disk used by the task, try again. If space is available but the error persists, note the app, destination, and exact message; the cause may be elsewhere.
