Why is System Data taking up so much space on my Mac?

System Data can look alarming because it groups many items together. Apple describes it as a general category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit another storage category. Its size can change, and the label does not tell you that a particular file is safe to delete.

What System Data means

The category may include caches, logs, temporary files, app support data, plug-ins, and other items. macOS manages some temporary data itself, and storage figures may take time to recalculate. The contents differ from Mac to Mac.

Check the rest of Storage too

Open System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier versions of macOS, check About This Mac > Storage. Review the named categories and recommendations; a large System Data figure is only one part of the overview.

Look for personal files you can identify

Check Downloads, media folders, and project folders for items you recognise. Mac Disk Space Helper can scan a folder you choose and show the sizes of its folders and files. It cannot map the whole System Data category or determine which system items are safe to remove. It reads sizes only and will not alter files.

If the scan shows a large Library folder or unfamiliar app data, do not remove it just because of its size. Use the app that created the data, check its support guidance, or ask Apple Support.

Give macOS time to refresh

After removing a known file you no longer need, wait for the storage overview to update and check again. A restart can also refresh some readings. Apple notes that macOS clears certain safe-to-remove caches and logs when space is needed.
