How to make more space on your Mac safely

You do not need to clear everything to make a useful start. First find out which categories and folders are using space, then review items you recognise and can replace, move, or live without.

Check your available storage

Open Apple menu  > System Settings > General > Storage. On older macOS versions, look under About This Mac > Storage. The category labels can take a little while to update. Use this screen as an overview, not a list of files that are automatically safe to remove.

Find large, familiar items

Mac Disk Space Helper can scan a folder you choose and show the largest folders and files inside it. Start with a folder you know, such as Downloads or a personal project folder. It reads sizes only; it will not delete or move anything or automatically free space.

For each large item, ask: do I know what this is, do I still need it, and do I have another copy if I remove or move it? If the answer is unclear, leave it in place.

Choose low-risk things to review

  1. Old downloads and installers that you can download again.
  2. Large exports, recordings, or archives that you have checked and no longer need.
  3. Apps you recognise and no longer use; remove them using their normal uninstaller or app instructions.
  4. Files you can move to a suitable external drive after checking the copy opens there.
  5. Items in the Bin, but only after checking you do not want to restore them.

Leave unfamiliar system data alone

Do not delete unknown files from Library, System, or hidden folders just because they look large. Avoid cleanup steps that disable protections or remove files without showing what they are. If you use iCloud, changing what is stored locally can affect access and use your iCloud plan.

Apple’s storage guide explains built-in recommendations and common ways to review files. Read the details before enabling any automatic option.
