Mac is out of storage and won’t let me save files: where to start

A save failure can happen when the startup disk or the chosen destination is nearly full. If you are saving to an external drive or shared folder, the issue may instead be that destination’s space or access settings. Start with the exact place you are trying to save.

Check the save location

Look at the folder named in the Save dialog. If it is on your Mac, check Apple menu  > System Settings > General > Storage (or About This Mac > Storage on older macOS versions). If it is an external drive, select that drive in Finder and choose File > Get Info. Check the available space on both the Mac and destination when you are unsure.

Notice the exact message

A message that says there is not enough space points to storage. “Operation not permitted” or “You don’t have permission” suggests the app cannot access that location. Try saving a copy to a folder in your own account, such as Documents, if appropriate. Do not loosen permissions on system folders.

For an external drive that can be read but not written to, its format or permissions may matter. Apple explains the checks in its guide for saving files to an external drive.

Find something you can review

  1. Check Downloads and other personal folders for large files you recognise.
  2. Use Mac Disk Space Helper to scan a folder you choose and see which files and folders are largest.
  3. Keep the original until you confirm that a moved or copied file opens correctly.
  4. Check the Bin before emptying it.

Save again after checking

Mac Disk Space Helper only reads sizes in selected folders. It does not make space, move files, or fix permission and external-drive problems. Once you have addressed the issue you identified, try saving to the intended location again.
