Mac says there isn’t enough storage to download, install or copy

The message usually means the destination does not have enough available space for the task. That may be your Mac’s startup disk, a chosen folder on another volume, or an external drive. The amount needed can be greater than the final file size.

Work out which disk is involved

For a download or app installation, check the Mac’s available storage in System Settings > General > Storage. On older macOS versions, use About This Mac > Storage. For a copy, check both the source and the destination shown in Finder. If you are copying to an external drive, select it in Finder and choose File > Get Info to review its available space.

Allow for the task to need extra room

An installer may need temporary room while it prepares files. A ZIP or other archive must expand after downloading. A copy needs enough room on the destination, and a move between different drives may temporarily need room for both copies. If the message comes from a particular app, its own requirements may differ.

Review large items carefully

  1. Look at Downloads, old installers, and media you can replace or store elsewhere.
  2. Use Mac Disk Space Helper to scan a folder you choose and see which items are largest.
  3. Open anything you might remove in Finder and confirm that you no longer need it.
  4. If the destination is external, make sure it is writable and formatted for your intended use before making changes.

Retry once the right destination has room

The app helps you understand folders you select, but it does not free space automatically or diagnose every download, installer, or drive problem. Apple’s guide covers storage checks and common ways to review space.
